Sandless Refinishing and Dustless Floor Sanding in San Diego CA

San Diego CA Flooring

Hardwood’s natural beauty and durability are the very reasons that make it the most popular flooring option for San Diego homeowners. Unfortunately, due to the amount of foot traffic it receives over time, the once shiny hardwood floors become dull, discolored, scratched, cracked, and marked with water and stains. Thankfully, hardwood can be refinished.

Hardwood Floor Refinishing

Hardwood floor refinishing is the process of removing the floor’s coating to reveal the bare wood beneath it. This normally involves sanding. Floor sanding in San Diego however is unfavored by many due to the ill effects inhaling dust from sanding gives. For that, flooring companies introduced the terms “Sandless Refinishing” and “Dustless Floor Sanding”. Both are methods used to refurbish old hardwood floors. Their differences lie in how they are done and how your floors will look by the end.

How Floor Sanders in CA Refinish Hardwood

Basically, when hardwood flooring is refinished, it is sanded using a machine until the hardwood looks raw again. Depending on the size of the area, the sanding can be completed in as little as a day or extend a few more. After that, the floors will be stained a color of the homeowner’s choosing. Suppose a homeowner chooses not to stain the floor. In that case, it will be coated with layers of polyurethane or another type of wood finish instead. Polyurethane, the most popular finish, may either be oil or water-based. Sanding is done in between layers of the coating when it has dried. This is done to make the floor smooth.

Dustless Floor Sanding

The issue with sanding is that it creates dust and a lot of mess. Inhaling dust causes harm to the body and health, so floor sanders use special equipment hooked to a vacuum to contain the dust. The process itself is not “dustless”, but it minimizes the dust and contains it. This method also effectively makes the refinishing process faster than the standard sanding process because more minor cleanup is involved.

Sandless Refinishing

In this method, as the name implies, the floors are not sanded. Instead, the floor is simply “screened” or coated with polyurethane. Through this, homeowners cannot change the color of their hardwood. Changing the floor’s color is possible with Dustless Floor Sanding.

Length of Time to Refinish Hardwood

Most contractors can finish sanding 1000 square feet per day but larger than that, it may take up to 2 days. In addition, the kind of finish to be used determines how long the entire hardwood refinishing process would take. Oil-based polyurethane takes longer to dry than water-based polyurethane. Each layer of polyurethane requires 24 hours to dry. The same is true with stains, but the drying time may take 36 or up to 48 hours if it is darker.

Finally, refinished hardwood floors cannot be walked on for at least 24 hours. It is also ideal to wait 4 days before moving back furniture.

Sanding Hardwood Floors San Diego Costs

The total cost would depend on the flooring contractors' methods (sandless or dustless), how big the project is, and how much the materials cost. If homeowners would DIY, they would have to add the rent for a floor sander in their budget. The fee depends on how long it will be needed and the features of the machine.

When to Refinish or Replace Hardwood Floor

Generally, refinishing hardwood floors is more practical than replacing them. But not all hardwood floors can be or should be refinished. Some damages are beyond repairs, such as structural damages, extreme wear, and damages caused by water or moisture build-up.
